The Bobo Beatdown: Experiment Beating up an Inanimate Clown

The Bobo Doll Experiment It's 1961. You're wandering around Stanford University looking for a sandwich or something when you happen to walk by a particular room in a particular lab and see something a little unnerving. Namely, you find a woman punching an inflatable clown named Bobo in the neck. over and over in its neck. This was the lab of legendary psychologist Albert Bandura, and in 1961 he was studying one of the most important phenomena in psychology. See, while that woman was throttling that big inflatable clown, a child was watching her. After about ten minutes of observing this clown-beating display, the kid was taken to a room full of fun toys. which were soon taken away, and then the frustrated kid was left alone with Bobo, and Bandura watched what happened.   Social Cognitive Learning. And yeah, what happened was kinda scary. Kids who watched the woman beating the clown were much more likely to mimic her aggression, kicking, punching, throwing, and even attempting ...

Deeper Understanding: HOMUNCULUS.

Homunculus.  If you've heard that word, it probably wasn't in the context of psychology. a monster in Dungeons and Dragons, a song by the Maybe Giants, and the bad guys in Fullmetal Alchemist, a novel by James Blaylock. It's Latin for little man, and in psychology, it refers to a kind of sensory map of the human body, a depiction of what we'd look like if each of our parts grew in proportion to how much we sense with them. Witness! Look at this dude. His ham hands could rip off a car door. I mean, like, if he could lift them, which he couldn't. This is what we're supposed to look like on the inside? This Freaky Thing illustrates the weighted significance of our sensory receptors. His disproportional hands are monstrous, for example, because we primarily touch the world with our hands, not our elbows.   So our hands are extremely sensitive. His mouth, meanwhile, is huge because we also have a ton of sensory receptors in our tongues and lips. It's what we use...

How We Make Memories: Our Brains Make and Recall Memories in Different Ways.

Accessing Memory; Recall, Recognition, and Relearning. Clive Waring was playing the piano alone in his room. When his wife came into the room, he immediately leaped up and embraced her with joyful enthusiasm. A minute later, she slipped out to grab a glass of water, and when she returned, he gave her that same bright greeting, as if she'd been gone for days. And then he did it again, and again. Clive was an accomplished London musician, until in 1985, at the age of 47, he contracted a rare herpes encephalitis virus that ravaged his central nervous system. Since then, he's been unable to remember almost any of his past or to make new memories. His wife is the only person he recognizes, but he can never recall the last time he saw her.  This may be the most profound case of extreme and chronic amnesia ever recorded. Our memory helps make us who we are, whether recognizing loved ones, recalling past joys, or just remembering how to walk and talk and fry an egg. Memory is the ch...
